Patients have more choices than ever on the NHS. We are proud to announce our inclusion as one of the healthcare providers on the NHS e-referral service.

What is NHS e-referral service?

The e-referral system was previously known as ‘choose and book’ until June 2015. Since the name change, the system has undergone a lot of changes making it more patient friendly. The e-referral system allows you to elect where you have surgery with a choice of independent clinics, unlike before, when you had to turn up at a place and date allocated to you.

How can you be referred?

You can discuss your options with your General Practitioner (GP) and referrals can be made through them. You can choose the date and time of your appointment and your GP can book your appointment there and then.

Alternatively, you can take some time to think about your choices, compare the options and book later on. You will be sent the relative information needed to book your appointment by either using the NHS e-Referral Service or over the phone using The Appointments Line.

Will not booking at my GP’s reduce my choice of where I can be referred?

No, in fact more than 90% of healthcare providers allow you to book your appointment through NHS e-Referral Service online or via The Appointments Line.

Will the new e-Referral system make the process quicker?

With NHS e-Referral Service you can book your appointment online, at the GP surgery or via phone using The Appointment Line. You will also be able to choose a date and time for your appointment that is convenient for you hence it is expected to speed up the process. Unlike the traditional procedure, where your GP had to write a letter to the healthcare provider and they would allocate a date and time for your appointment. This would take several weeks and the date and time offered was often not suitable.

What are the benefits?

You will have more control over the planning, booking and management of your own appointments. This can be extremely beneficial when organising around commitments like work and home, your existing appointments or current on-going treatment. The system also allows you to cancel or change your appointments either online or over the phone, making the experience far more convenient and stress free.

We will be sharing the benefits of being part of this new system with members of our optometrist network. You will not only be able to refer to us directly but will be sending you patients for their post-operative checks locally.

Gone are the days of feeling like you are receiving an inferior service on the NHS.
