Deciding to have laser eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for many. After all, our eyes are one of the most delicate parts of our body, and the thought of somebody poking around with a scalpel is enough to turn anyone’s stomach.
Added to that, if something goes wrong we imagine we could lose one of our most important senses – our sight.
Just how safe is laser eye surgery?
To put your mind at rest, it is actually very safe, and less than 5% of cases experience any type of complication.
Even those who do have issues following the treatment find that things clear up by themselves within two or three weeks, and if treatment is required it is usually in the form of medical eye drops for comfort. In a few, very rare, cases a second operation may be needed to correct the problem, but this situation is really not at all common.
Celebrities who have had eye surgery
But don’t take our word for it. Laser surgery has earned an endorsement from a number of household names and celebrities over the years, all of whom have made a swift and full recovery following treatment.
Here are just a few of the celebrities that have publicly confirmed that they have undergone laser eye surgery:
- Brad Pitt
- Nicole Kidman
- Cindy Crawford
- Ashlee Simpson
- Courteney Cox
- Jessica Simpson
- Elton John
- Mel B
- Michael Bolton
- Richard Branson
- Tiger Woods
- Kim Kardashian
The list could go on for a great deal longer, with everyone from athletes and actors to presenters and musicians opting to go for a life without glasses thanks to laser eye surgery.

What the celebrities say
Some celebrities have gone a step further than just having the operation. Some, including Kim Kardashian, Jessica Simpson and Phillip Schofield have allowed the procedure to be filmed for their TV shows.
Phillip Schofield, a glasses wearer since age 15, underwent surgery in 2011, having the entire experience recorded for ‘This Morning’. Amazingly, just 20 minutes after surgery, Philip was recorded retaking the eye test and displaying better than 20-20 vision (in fact, 20-16 vision, which the surgeon commented was ‘fighter jet pilot standard’).
Schofield was blown away by the experience and openly delighted with how simple the procedure was. In an interview with ‘Hello!’ magazine, he commented,
“Done! Unbelievable, astonishing, painless and quite emotional”

Well, that says it all really.
Another prominent celebrity who recently went through the procedure is the immortal Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones guitarist had eye surgery in 2012, commenting to the Daily Mail,
“It was a harmless, quick procedure and I’m very happy with the results.”

For anyone who is considering laser surgery, Oxo Mum and loose woman Lynda Bellingham, who had her treatment some years ago, has this advice to offer:
“I would say to anyone who’s thinking about it, go for it, just go for it – it will change your life.”
